Substitution Method

Lesson 2 of 5
Solve one equation for one variable, substitute into the other, and solve. E.g. from x−y=−1x - y = -1 we get x=y−1x = y - 1; put in 3x−5y=−13x - 5y = -1: 3(y−1)−5y=−1⇒−2y=2⇒y=−1,x=−23(y-1) - 5y = -1 \Rightarrow -2y = 2 \Rightarrow y = -1, x = -2.
