Patterns in Mathematics

Discover number and shape patterns, sequences, and the reasoning behind them.

Lessons
4 concepts
  1. 1
    Rules Behind Patterns
Every pattern hides a rule. The sequence 2,4,6,8,…2,4,6,8,\ldots has rule *add 2*. The sequence 1,2,4,8,…1,2,4,8,\ldots has rule *multiply by 2*. Spotting the rule lets us predict the next term.
  2. 2
    Number Shapes
Numbers can be drawn as dots in shapes. Triangular: Tn=n(n+1)/2T_n = n(n+1)/2. Square: Sn=n2S_n = n^2. Sum of first nn odd numbers equals n2n^2.
  3. 3
    Fibonacci-like Patterns
Some patterns depend on previous terms. Fibonacci: 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,…1,1,2,3,5,8,13,\ldots each term = sum of two before.
  4. 4
    Patterns in Nature
Patterns appear in flower petals (often 3, 5, 8, 13), pinecones, snail spirals, and honeycombs.
