4 concepts
  1. 1
    What is a Set?
    A set is a well-defined collection of distinct objects. Notation: roster form A={1,2,3}A = \{1, 2, 3\} and set-builder form A={x:x∈N, x<4}A = \{x : x \in \mathbb{N},\, x < 4\}.
  2. 2
    Types of Sets
    Finite/infinite sets, equal sets, empty set ∅\varnothing, singleton, subset A⊆BA \subseteq B, proper subset A⊊BA \subsetneq B, power set P(A)P(A) with ∣P(A)∣=2∣A∣|P(A)| = 2^{|A|}.
  3. 3
    Operations on Sets
    Union A∪BA \cup B, intersection A∩BA \cap B, difference A∖BA \setminus B, complement A′A'. De Morgan's laws: (A∪B)′=A′∩B′(A \cup B)' = A' \cap B'.
  4. 4
    Venn Diagrams & Cardinality
    Use Venn diagrams to visualise. ∣A∪B∣=∣A∣+∣B∣−∣A∩B∣|A \cup B| = |A| + |B| - |A \cap B|; extend to three sets via inclusion–exclusion.
