Detailed theory
Two perpendicular number lines — the horizontal xx-axis and vertical yy-axis — meet at the origin OO. Any point PP in the plane is identified by an ordered pair (x,y)(x, y), where xx is its perpendicular distance from the yy-axis (signed) and yy is that from the xx-axis.
Key concepts & formulas
01
Coordinates of a point: (x,y)(x, y); xx is abscissa, yy is ordinate.
02
Origin is (0,0)(0, 0).
03
Quadrant I: (+,+)(+, +); II: (,+)(-, +); III: (,)(-, -); IV: (+,)(+, -).
04
Points on xx-axis have y=0y = 0; on yy-axis, x=0x = 0.
05
Distance from origin =x2+y2= \sqrt{x^2 + y^2}.
06
Reflection across xx-axis: (x,y)(x,y)(x, y)\to (x, -y); across yy-axis: (x,y)(x,y)(x, y)\to (-x, y).
