Detailed theory
yxy \propto x means y=kxy = kx for constant kk. As xx increases, yy increases at the same rate. E.g. cost of a fixed-price commodity.
Key concepts & formulas
01
Direct: x1y1=x2y2\dfrac{x_1}{y_1} = \dfrac{x_2}{y_2} (both increase together).
02
Inverse: x1y1=x2y2x_1 y_1 = x_2 y_2 (one increases as the other decreases).
03
Cost of items and quantity: direct.
04
Number of workers and time to finish: inverse.
05
Speed and time (for fixed distance): inverse.
