Detailed theory

An equation states that two expressions are equal, involving one or more variables. A solution is a value of the variable making the equation true.

Key concepts & formulas

Both sides of an equation remain equal under the same operation.

Transposing a term changes its sign.

Multiplying/dividing both sides by a non-zero number keeps equality.

To solve: isolate the variable.

Verify by substituting the value back.
