Detailed theory
Comparison of two like quantities using division. Ratio of aa to bb is written a:ba:b or a/ba/b. E.g. ratio of 66 boys to 99 girls is 6:9=2:36:9 = 2:3 in lowest form.
Key concepts & formulas
01
A ratio compares two quantities of the same kind: a:b=aba : b = \dfrac{a}{b}.
02
In ratio a:ba:b, order matters.
03
Four numbers are in proportion if a:b::c:da:b :: c:d, i.e., ad=bcad = bc.
04
In the unitary method, first find the value of one unit, then scale.
05
Continued proportion: a:b::b:cb2=aca:b :: b:c \Rightarrow b^2 = ac.
