Every pattern hides a rule. The sequence

2,4,6,8,\ldots

has rule *add 2*. The sequence

1,2,4,8,\ldots

has rule *multiply by 2*. Spotting the rule lets us predict the next term.

Key concepts & formulas

A pattern repeats a rule; the rule may involve adding, multiplying, or shape changes.

Counting numbers (

1,2,3,\ldots

) form the simplest pattern.

Odd numbers:

1,3,5,7,\ldots

; even numbers:

2,4,6,8,\ldots

Triangular numbers:

1,3,6,10,15,\ldots

(dots forming triangles).

Square numbers:

1,4,9,16,\ldots

(dots forming squares).
